1992 244: reverse lights continue to either go out or not work 200

Auto trans, not too many miles (but still she is 17). Anyways the reverse lights tend to never work on my 244. The bulbs look fine, they've been replaced by mechanics over and over again in the past but never seem to work right. Could it have something to do with the cracked tail light covers, including the missing white piece of plastic for the reverse light on one side? is that water damage? the connections have been cleaned in the past, and it's ONLY the reverse lights which do not work.

Is this a common problem for the later model 240s? please let me know if this has happened to you. Thanks!!
