Spark plug diagnosis 900 1995

Hi All,

My 945 NA never runs right in the winter. Its hard to start and sometimes I have to crank several times before the engine warms up enough to catch. This winter, I installed one of those pad style block heaters that attaches to the outside of the oilpan. Subsequent start were much easier, even in -10F minnesota weather.

I changed the sparkplugs last fall before winter, and just changed them again today. I have pictures of the (old, dirty, Bosch platinum plus) plus on the web here:

So, the question is, why are my plugs so dirty? There's a bunch of accumulated carbon under the prong part of the plug, but the rest of the plug is fairly white. Is this indicative that I need a new O2 sensor (ie, too rich?).

My check-engine light (CEL) comes on every time I start the car, but it goes away at about the time the engine gets up to temperature.

Also, I believe my car is the California version (with the extra tubes running to the downpipe - is this EGR)? Does this make a new O2 sensor a much harder job.

Finally, does the 95 have OBD access so I can diagnose the CEL?

Oh, one more thing. Where the heck is the flame trap on this car? For the life of me I can't find it.
