Engine idles too fast 700

The engine idles too fast (~1200 rpm) in my 1985 740GLE (non-turbo). I could not adjust idle speed down using the plastic know adjustment; it has no effect.

I also noticed that when the ambient temperature is low 50-60 F, the idle is faster (~1200rpm). Conversely, in the summer time (outside temp in the 90's)the idle is ~1000-1100rpm.

a) Is it possible to change the engine temperature sensor without removing the intake manifold?
b) Has anyone experienced this problem?
c) Has anyone fixed this idle problem?
d) Is there a procedure for its repair?

thank you for helping,
