960 Maf testing question. 900 1996

Today my check engine light came on and I took it to Advanced auto and it came up as a maf voltage to high. The car started running rough on cruise when you go to accelerate and off idle acceleration and small rough spots on idle. I unplugged the maf while idling in the driveway and it seemed to stop the occasional "wanting to die symptom during idle". I have a haynes manual and have looked all over the internet, but how do I check voltage and ohms resistance on my harness? I don't want to throw more money out the window. I have a very strong feeling that the maf is bad, I attempted to clean it with the maf cleaner (did not help).
