Floppy Shifter 900 1993

The shift lever on our 940 automatic is so loose it just moves up and down the range of its motion with no resistance at all and no clicking into any of the gears/positions. Also, you can turn on the car and the car seems to be in drive because it inches forward when I take my foot off the brake. I drove the car on errands this morning and it was fine. I was at an event later in the afternoon and my wife called saying she couldn't make it because the car "wouldn't go into gear." It's a kind of catastrophic failure of shifting, but I have a sense some pin or bolt or connection between the shifter and the tranny came lose.
I don't do much car work anymore, lacking a garage. But, I'd like any opinions about what's going on before I have it towed and diagnosed. If I'm wrong and it's really serious that may be the end of this old brick.
Thanks
Tim
