Huge BANG sound and grinding from the rear differential (help!) S90-V90 1997

(Thanks in advance for your responses)-- 1997 965 wagon 146k (Texas)

I pulled in the driveway last night when I heard/felt a huge BANG!!! sound. Checked the front suspension and made sure everything had not broken loose / brake calipers were all in place. Took the car down the block only to be greeted by a major metal/metal grinding sound from the rear axle area.

Put the rear of the car on jack stands and ran her in forward and reverse / emergency brake on and off / and checked the engine/tranny mounts. No sounds. No grinding. But under load in reverse or forward, and especially around corners, major grinding.

I've got the rear back up on stands and was about to pull the rear wheels. I'm getting no play/slop at either rear wheel. The driveshaft joints don't have any extra play. The CV joints all seem solid with no play at the wheel or into the differential.

Man, I'd hate to take this to the shop. What do you think? What should I check next?
