power gone south over the years

Have a 85 240DL wagon..About 225,000 miles on it..Not using oil but power has gone south so bad it almost makes you cry to drive it on the freeway...Is it common for these engines to wearout but still not use oil??..I keep this car in great condition and tuneups happen once a year and i give it everything it needs to continue to be a good runner..And it does run good and steady..Just has so little power left...Thinking about finding sources for good rebuilt or new motors..Would even be nice to find someone who builds them with a little more power..Anyone have answers to help...I sure would be thankful!!!!
