Mystery wire that I'm pretty sure attaches the the alternator, and battery question 140-160 1975

When I swapped alternators on the 164 I noticed a disconnected wire that was the perfect length to attach to the alternator. It runs under the battery tray and disappears arount the radiator. Anybody know what I'm talking about, where it goes, and which post it attaches to on the alternator? Mine has the external voltage regulator, if that makes a difference.

Also, the battery tray is shot, which has caused the battery to rub on the front sheet metal, causing a leak. Oops, battery no longer properly charges, not good. Any reccomendations for an affordable fix?
