removing head stalled by 2" of plastic. 900 1993

This project has gone by the book thanks to the FAQ lots of blaster and Bruce Young's "rope trick" (thanks)

However as I get ready to pull the head it appears the timing cover backing plate is going to be in the way. There is nothing in the FAQ about it. Do you remove the cam pulley and tensioner first? Can I hit the cam pulley bolt with my impact? I started to back out the little stud on the tensioner with an 8mm open end wrench but I though I'd ask before I end up with a 8mm stud embedded in some part of my body.
