M40 trans questions 120-130

I dismantled my M40 today and found the output bearing bad. The question involves the input bearing though. On inspection I found it to be a shielded bearing on the case side and open on the engine side. Is this the correct application. If so, how does oil travel from the case to the engine side of the bearing? I can see how it returns.
Is there a tolerance for the needle bearings on the main shaft. Mine seem loose but not worn.
