First Brake Job S90-V90

After being told that my brakes are "very low" and need to be replaced, I am thinking of tackling the job myself. After reading the FAQ section here and the directions in ALLDATA, the job looks simple to do. Not having experience in brake jobs, I got a few questions for you S90 veterans.
1. Feeling the rotors, there is a ridge from the edge of the rotor to the braking surface a little less than the thickness of a dime (thinner on the braking surface). Should I replace the rotors?
2. IPD sell a "brake hardware kit" for both the front and the back, is this needed or recommended?
3. Should I take this opportunity to replace the brake fluid with synthetic?
4. Any last words of wisdom for this rookie, that will make the job easier, (other than take it to my mechanic).
Thanks
