This morning after Bible study and breakfast (celebrating our 47th anniversary) I hooked up the battery on
the Yellow Peril and walking around it noticed the brake light was on. Inspection revealed I had broken off the button and bent the bracket on the switch that operates it.
Fortunately I had a switch in the culch heap and it was not too big a job to remove and straighten the bracket.
It was quite a bit bigger job to get the bracket reinstalled in position but perseverance paid off.
Heat index was probably around 100° so lots of sweat was produced under the dash!
I cranked it up and drove it up the driveway to get it in a better position to replace the center tie rod.
At the top of the driveway it died and would not restart. I managed to push it and get it back down
facing the right way and in a convenient location. I popped off the tie rod and noticed that the new one had the right ends but was about 6" longer. The center of the old one
was pretty rusty, so I wire brushed it and painted it, Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer followed by black.
Looking under the hood I noticed a green wire with ¼" slip-on terminals on both ends lying loose.
At the same time I noticed that there was NOTHING connecting the coil to the distributor, explaining
the dying and nonstart. I pinched the terminals tighter and put the wire back on. Hope it stays!
I noticed that the idler arm was hanging pretty loose so I took it off and the center of the bushing fell out.
I had a new bushing and took it a couple places to see about getting it pressed into the arm.
One place couldn't do it and another could but wanted $35 to do it. Not for this Scotsman!!
By this time it was getting close to time for my friends in the Irish band Kilkenny Road to be playing at
the OKMozart festival so I showered and Susie and I went to town.
We also won ticket to the OKM Silver Anniversary concert this evening so work will resume tomorrow.
