One reason why Volvo AC is marginal 200 1985

I just finished my first AC repair with the Volvo "R134a upgrade kit" in our 1985 245, which by the way went extremely well. When I yanked the old evaporator from the housing, I noticed that more than half of its surface area was covered with crud that came in through the fresh air intake. Volvo AC has the reputation for being marginal, and this may be one of the reasons. Our '88 also barely cools, I am going to see if by using a long nylon brush (or a toothbrush with a long handle)I can dislodge some of the crud and then pull it out with the vacuum cleaner.
