Water leaks the rear cabin 700 1987

Hi folks,

My 740 sedan has had a water leak on the passenger side for... I think a very long time. I only got the car 18 months ago, so I can only go by the amount of staining and gunk in the cabin. Anyway, I got around to removing the rear seats today, after leaving a Damp-Rid bag in there for a solid week in the NC heat (OMG I've never seen a Damp-Rid bag so full). The rear seats had never been removed.

The foam on the passenger side is soggy, and I found standing water in the little plastic plug-cups in the sheet metal. There was a negligible amount of rust, for which I was thankful. It appears the leak is coming from the frame rail where the seat belt is attached, or thereabouts. I can only figure two things: that the glass there is leaking around the seal, or that, as per the FAQ, the spot welds' sealer goo has degraded.

The headliner is not wet. The rear window drain channel is unobstructed. The leak is coming from that pillar and flowing onto the edge of the package shelf and into the trunk, and over the package shelf and under the passenger side rear bench seat.

The way I used to park my car, I had the nose down, and it would leave the whole bottom of the car wet after a severe rainstorm; the trunk would be soaked too. Now, parking with the nose up, the moisture is minimal and the trunk remains only damp after a rain.

I've explained the problem, but I have no answers and no idea how to check for the solution. Please help me keep the mold from growing in my car.

Thanks!

Ari
