Front brake pad fit problem 900 1995

Hi all,

I'm changing the front brake pads on my '95 940 for the first time. The new pads were easy enough to seat (after compressing the piston, of course), but here's my problem: No matter what I try, I can't fit the caliper back onto the rotor now. The piston is compressed so far that the pad face is lower than the profile of the caliper itself, so all I'm left with is that I must have somehow purchased the wrong part. But after taking it back to the shop and checking it against three others, they're all identical in thickness.

There must be something incredibly simple that I'm overlooking. Bless you in advance for telling me what it is! Bonus points for not laughing at me.

Cheers,
Dana
