Temp gage needle pegged - engine damage ? 700

Hello group, ( 1991 745 turbo 185000 mi.)
Yesterday coming back from the hardware store i happened to look down and noticed the check engine light on. Looked at all the gages and the temp. needle was bouncing back and forth (it does that alot -TCB-?), but near the high side. Then about a mile down the freeway it pegged right. I got off the freeway a soon as i could, but i probably drove about 1/2 - 3/4 mile before i stopped and turned the engine off. I did not see steam coming from under the hood until about the last 200 yards before stopping.
My question is: Do you think the engine is now shot. Are there things i can check , or do i need to let the mechanic do the testing ?

Thanks in advance for any info. about dealing with a overheated engine.

Ron,
