a tire question/problem 200

my youngest called me from out west on his way home to tell me he shredded one of his rear tires (205 70 14) near wichita kansas. he stopped at a junkyard he had just passed after putting on his spare and told me all he could find was a 195 70 14 for the money he had and so bought it and put had it put on.

after the usual father son .......why didn't you call me before this he said the usual i can handle things dad.

any way correct me if i have given him bad info.

1. i told him to make sure his 240 had matching sizes on the rear (drive) axle so the rear end gears would not spin unbalanced and wear out faster.
2. i told him to place the new smaller size tire on the front drivers side of the car because the road is crowned so the smaller size there would tend to allow the car to sit level as can be.

3. i told his to be extra careful because steering could be compromised

any other tips when he calls again or corrections?
