1997 965 alternator brush/regulator replacement. 900 1997

This should be the same as the S-V90 cars.

I have the new part. The car has 201200 miles, so the brushes should be about to the end of their life. Voltage across the battery with the engine running is 13.0, and I think it should be be 14.0 to 14.5.

The question: Can this job be done without removing the alternator from the car?

It looks like a power steering line runs to the pump close behind the alternator and thus preventing the cover on the back of the alternator from being removed.

If that hose is removed and set aside, can the alternator cover be popped off and the brush/regulator unit be accessed enough for removal/replacement?

Removing from the car the alternator and/or the power steering pump means removing the serpentine belt, which requires a 3/4-inch drive adapter for my 1/2-inch socket set. Where does on find such a tool?

Thanks for your ideas, comments, and for taking the time to read this post.
