Tough Steering, Bad Noise 900

Hi all,

I have a 97 960 with 112k miles. In the past number of months, the steering started to get weird. First it was tough to steer right. Then it became tough to steer in either direction. Now there seems to be an audible scrapping like noise coming from the steer column somewhere when the wheel is turned more than 20 degrees in either direction. Also, the wheel seems to be binding and does not return by itself. Any ideas on what this could be? I search and read some older posts about universal joint issues, which kinda sounded like my issue, but now with the noise I am not sure (unless the u-joint binding can create a noise in the column). Any ideas?

Thanks!
