Looking at a 240 with a fuel problem 200

Hi there all. Just found this site, and this is my first post. I own the new owner of an 89 240 sedan, and I am in the market for a wagon as well.
I may be looking at a beautiful wagon tomorrow with what has been described as a "bad fuel pump". I can get no further info than this, and am not sure who made this diagnosis. My question is this:

What is the correct check order to run this problem down?
I will only buy this thing if I can hear it run and drive it, but I don't want to lay in someone's driveway for too long getting it done.

p.s., I am really hoping it is just the fuel pump relay!!

Thanks!
