The following has to do with a 1988 244 DL.
Sorry if this is overly simplistic ... but have you done the basics:
ignition, air, fuel?
I wouldn't think a fuel problem would be involved unless it is coming from a sensor.
Checked/Replaced:
Ignition:
spark plugs (even if they are sold to last forever they get dirty and underperform) > 15 K mi.
distributor rotor (clean polished tip - no scorch marks) > 50 K mi.
distributor cap (black lines inside or electrodes worn) > 50 K mi.
ignition cables (midnight test to see shorts) > 50 K mi.
coil - ? mi. - I'm still on the original at 147 K mi.
Air:
air filter > 30 K mi. - clogged or also nesting wild life, failed heater hose bypass valve (this probably not it if it runs well after getting rolling - and it is June)
air intake path looking for holes especially along spots that rub. If in doubt fill the bellows with water (of the car) and see if it leaks.
Clean throttle body and choke.
Emissions:
clean EGR ...
make sure vacuum hoses are clear - and attached
Electronic:
Fuel relay - can cause start problems when hot (disconnect and throw in the freezer for 10 minutes - reconnect to note difference)
Check OHM specs an AMM, and sensors (water temp, water gage, oxygen)
Clean contacts
