camshaft front oil seal popped out 200 1984

I didn't realize this could even happen. The orange colored seal was half way out of its seat and dumping oil pretty good and running onto the exhaust manifold. It was one of those ,"I hope that smell isn't me", experiences. I was able to reach behind the cam gear with a putty knife and push it back it where it belongs, and keep driving. Only lost half a quart.

I suspected a clogged flame trap, but I got in there and found the screen was clear. I blew through the big and little hoses and fittings and they were clear. I repositioned the big hose and was able to blow air down into the crank case with the oil fill cap off. With the cap on, the crank case held lung pressure, but the seal stayed put.

I've been reading the archive posts about driving in the seals with hammers or special tools, so I'm surprised this could even happen. And it goes against my experience with oil seals in other cars. I'm going to replace it, but I'm curious whether anyone else has heard of this happening with a seal.
