Sill Plate 444-544

I'm trying to use the sill plates from the 544 parts car. They are better than the originals from my 444 but not by much. The metal is fine but the rubber is pretty poor (similar to the one now on Ebay). Cleaned up and tried repainting with "bumper black" from the parts store. Better but not by much.

Last time I looked they are not available new - is that still true?

I'm thinking that I can make something that would look better than what I am able to do with my old ones. Before I start - has anyone come up with a fix for this? Suggested approaches?
