Hello All,
Over the last week or so my son in NJ has been telling me that the car (93 Red wagon) won't start - but not all the time. It won't even crank over.
So he turns the key back to position 1, then tries again (key back to pos 3 to start). Sometimes it starts, and sometimes it takes 20 tries. Sometimes it doesn't start it all. On other occasions, it starts right up on the first try as if nothing is wrong.
I had him monkey around with the shifter, to ascertain whether the neutral safety switch was out of alignment. When shifted to neutral or with the shifter pushed into a slightly off neutral or park position, the car still did not start, so I concluded that the neutral safety switch was not the problem. I also had him smack the starter with a broom-stick handle and (from the limited perspective I'm getting over the telephone) that seemed to solve his problem because subsequently the car started.
So I assumed the starter was the problem and we had the starter replaced with a Bosch rebuilt unit. A week later, sonny boy called to tell me the car wouldn't start and it doesn't even crank over. Same deal. I'm in upstate NY 250 miles away, so I really can't help him too much.
I suppose he could purchase a 12v test light and when the car acts up, he could see if there's power at the starter, but I have to be careful with him (me too) cause he's very inexperienced. Plus, the car only acts up occasionally.
Any suggestions that I could throw his way.
Thanks,
Marty Wolfson
