converting headlights on an 85 245 200 1985

I have an 85 245 that I had replaced the 4 rectangle headlights with 4 round ones. However, when I did that I noticed that the high beams were always on (but very dim). The "high beam" indicator is very faint on the dashboard too.

On the advice of a friend, I tried to eliminate what it could be (bad lights) and replaced the high beams with the old rectangle lenses. That did not make a difference. So I replaced the regular beam light on the passenger side with the original rectangle and the dimming stopped. This scenario was 3 rectangle and 1 round.

So I figured it was a bum regular headlight and bought two new ones. Even if that turns out to not be the issue, I wanted extras anyways. I bought these in a junkyard for a song.

So when I put the brand new headlight in (replacing the temporary rectangle), the dimming returned.

So I thought maybe it meant the other regular headlight was bad and replaced it. It didn't make a lick of difference.

Does anyone know why the lights work 100% ok with the rectangle but act strange with the round ones? I'm sure it's something simple.

thanks
