Help - I mutilated 3 cam seals already! 200

I did the timing belt and seals in another 240 3 years ago so I'm not a total novice, but I am having a heck of a time with this cam seal.

I scraped out the old seal which was nearly petrified and leaking oil all over the water pump. Lubed interior of seal, and camshaft, tried to insert it and it wont go more than half way in.

Pulled it back out, scraped more debris out including the spring from old seal, and tried again. Pressed it in with thumbs, pounded with large socket. It still hangs out more than 1/8 of an inch or so. Read Bentley, brickboard, I don't get it.
