Or maybe it's the ignition switch itself. You did write that you "played" with it, "on and off". If the starter stopped by sheer coincidence, then it's something else; but on the other hand, if you believe that your "playing" did the trick, then it's the ignition switch.

Think back and try to remember more clearly.
