Replacing the Neutral Safety Switch in a '81 940 Turbo

I have been trying to replace my neutral safety switch in my '91 940 turbo for a few days but I can't seem to get it off of the shifter w/o hitting the side wall of the shifter housing. Does that mean I have to somehow remove the shifter from the car to replace the NSS or am I missing something?

I have hotwired it so it will run but I lose my back up lights when I do that.

Anyone done this before?

thanks
