A flaky crank position sensor will act something like you describe. It might be wise to read out the fault codes (per instructions in 700/900 FAQ) to see if there is anything related to the crank (RPM) sensor.

Also you could carry a spare spark plug with you to test for spark when you have the next no-start. That would help in narrowing down the possible causes.
