wife needs wheels

My wife's car is headed for the Ca. buy back program. The beast (200 astrovan) has bent my brain for the last time. I can find no books on it, and I am pretty much on my own. Recently I changed plugs and wires. Just as to give you an idea.
The first thing to do, take out the driver's seat. It was pretty much down hill from there.
It's not going to pass smog given my attitude and attachment to my money, it's going to the last round up.
So we are looking for something I can care for, without encouraging an enurysm.
We live in south Los Angeles Cty. and will travel some for a good deal.
Wife is leaning towards a wagon, but doesn't want to take the bus to work. I looked in the clasifides but didn't see much in my neighborhood.
We are looking at various sources and will post questions about known pitfalls, problems, anad aggravations.
Thanks as always.
Paul
