fuel sending unit? 200 1988

I have a 1988 240 wagon 125k. Recently my fuel gauge stopped working. I shorted out the wires that go to the fuel sending unit and the fuel gauge registered full. Reading about replacing this unit seems like there's quite a bit to it and other parts of the fuel system in the same place. The manuals aren't very detailed about replacing the sending unit.

I'm wondering if someone could give me some step by step directions. I purchased the special tool from IPD and pre-treated the unit with PB blaster since it looks like it very rusted in place.

Also is it advisable to change the in take fuel pump at the same time? I can hear my pump working when the car is running and the radio is off. How do you change the fuel pump at the same time? Any suggestions is much appreciated.
