Cowl leak repairs 140-160

Has anyone ever opened up the cowl on a 140 or 164? Any tips or what to watch out for? The cowl on my 164 is leaking into the passenger compartment from the corners of some of the seams, so I'm thinking about opening it up to blast the rust out and re-seal it. The spot welds along the firewall and windshield pinchweld should be easy to drill out. However, the cowl is integral to the windshield frame so it could probably be cut out at each end along the bottom of the A-pillars, otherwise the whole windshield frame would need to be removed which could get real complicated.

Thanks,
Preston
