No, the hood didn't fly open on me.
I can see the hood hopping around a little at speed. If I push down it'll give about 1-2mm. Oh hey, I can adjust that!
There shouldn't be that much play, right?
Anyway I tried adjusting the rubber baby buggy bumpers on the corners but this just made it hard to open the release and the hood when closed was above the fenders. Reset the bumpers and tried to turn the lock pin. Of course the entire upper latch is kinda rusty so I shot it w/PB Blaster and removed it.
REMEMBER TO MARK THE POSITION OF THE UPPER LATCH before REMOVING IT. It can move left/right and also slightly forward/backward. In my case it needed more forward.
The lock pin is frozen so I guess I need a new upper latch (Tasca has them for about $39) if I want to fix this fairly minor issue.
If the upper latch isn't installed exactly where it was, the pin can jam in the lower lock. Pulling the release unlocked it somewhat but it would not come up at all. Very fortunately there was just enough room to get in with needlenose, undo the grille pins, and pull the grill. Then use a 12mm combo wrench to tediously undo the two bolts about 1/3 turn at a time. Test fit the latch placement before closing: pull the release lever behind the lower latch and make sure the lock pin will mate with the lock hole smoothly while holding the release (if you have a helper to pull the inside handle, that's easier) If it's a go, button 'er back up. If not, reposition the upper latch, test, lather rinse repeat.
So, sorta-panic averted. This has been a public service announcement. Now I need a drink.
On the other hand, aligning the trunk lid to fix a small leak worked perfectly, so it wasn't all cussing and tool-throwing.
