Coolant questions 200 1991

Replacing the coolant is an easy enough task but what to do with the used fluid? Auto parts stores take back oil for the waste burners but not anti-freeze.
If I have it done at a shop it's about $70 ..... they use a "universal" coolant .... "works good on any car, even your old Volvo".
easy for them to say .... what about just filtering the old stuff and correcting the ph acidity level? Any tips?
