240 A/C switch types 200

I own a 85 Volvo 240 DL with the rotary (dial) type A/C switch. I am wondering how this switch functions, can somebody please explain this to me? I am aware that Volvo used another type of A/C switch that was like a rocker type (On & off). Can I replace (would there be any benefit to doing this) the rotary type switch with the rocker switch type? Any and all input is greatly apprectiated! Thanks
