The degree of shaking is somewhat related to the speed of the car before I stop it. When I have driven 60 mph for a while, the shaking is worse than when I have driven 30 mph. Perhaps this gives someone a clue?
Also the shaking gets less worse after a few minutes of idling. After a cold start, it is completely absent.

Howdy,

Check the fly weights and points plate in the distributor. If the flyweights are sticking in the extended position the ignition will remain advanced as the engine comes down to idle. Given enough time, the spring tension will overcome the friction of the rusty/crusty/worn fly weights. I don't know if it is your problem, but it explains the symptoms you outline in the quoted paragraph.
