240 wants to start, but backfires, then shuts down 200 1986

My son's 1986 245DL broke down on the cross Bronx expressway last week. Realizing that it would cost us a fortune to repair in the city, we put it on a tow dolly and towed it home to PA so I could sort it out.
The car wants to start but will only remain running for about 4 seconds before backfiring, then stopping. I've checked the timing belt; all marks line up perfectly with the distributor rotor pointing to the number one cylinder. I feel that I've covered the mechanical side, I need some suggestions on electrical trouble shooting.
PS: I've already ruled out a plugged catalytic converter.
