ECU compatibility; can a 511 be replaced with a 544 or a 554? 200

My 88 240 had an ECU ending in 511 with a loose part rattling in it. I have access to ECU's from parts cars ending in 554 and 544, coming from cars in the range '86 to '88. Are these ECU's interchangable with the one I took out of my car? I haven't seen another 511 anywhere yet and am wondering if that was even the original, as it has some handwritten letters on it (salvage yard codes?). To follow that line of thinking, is it possible to figure out which ECU my car originally had using the vin number or other ID stickers on the car?
