weird wiring issue with taillights and license plate lights 200

Hi,
just when I thought I could turn my attention to something superficial something else happens!

I shut the tailgate on my 245 wagon the other day and the right side license plate light fell out! The little tab had rusted off and allowed it to fall out and dangle by the wires.

I grabbed another light fixture from a nearby wreck. I then had to attach a new connector because the old one had corroded too much. This was all fiddly and time consuming but OK. Just when I went to test everything out The left side tail/brake light went out and now NO license plate lights work. This a.m. on the way to work I tried replacing the taillight bulb, but nothing changed. Still no tail/brake light OR license plate lights.

And yes I really need to get it inspected...

thanks,
