To Do Valve Job On High-Milage B230-T 900

Background: The car is a '93 945T with 260K miles and in good to very good condition.

I'm in the process of replacing the head gasket. It's been in need of a new head gasket for several years since a moderate over-heat incident.

The machine shop I'm using has a very good reputation, and knows Volvos. They will pressure/vacuum test, plane (if necessary), clean, replace the valve seals, and set valve lash. They recommend *against* doing a full valve job -- siting that with 260K miles, the top end will be so tight that it *could* put too much stress the bottom end which is likely worn. There's certainly some logic to that, but I've not heard anyone here mention this. They would of course charge more for the valve job, so there is no financial incentive for them to discourage the valve work.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance.
