Wiring for ambient temp gauge 93 240 200 1993

Hello BB's,

I recently acquired an ambient temp gauge from ebay that includes the full kit w/ wiring harness and temp sender.

I downloaded the factory instructions, thanks to Ryan R's Volvo page. The temp sender was a breeze to install which I placed on the left front shock absorber as per the Volvo instructions.

But I'm not sure about the wiring for the sender. The instructions say to drill a hole in the firewall, but I'm a bit wary of drilling into my brick. I have read a couple posts of others (with late model 240s) pulling wires through a flex pipe/corrugated tube with a conical rubber cap on the end. It sits just to the right of the hood release cable.
Does anyone else have experience pulling wires through this tube? Where do the wires come out in the engine compartment side? Also, is removal of the knee bolster required for this? Trying to remove those two Torx screws is next to impossible!!

Thanks for any help.
