Tom, poorly selected springs are bad all the way around. A well thought out combination of spring rates and shocks matched to your driving needs and style is very, very, good.
A well selected progressive will give a nearly stock ride characteristics on even flat road and as the thing gets bendy and working the suspension harder the progressive increase in spring rate will resist the greater loads being imposed on the springs while still retaining a compliant suspension that keeps all four wheels composed.
Selection of shocks is every bit as important as the springs... The there is tires, and brakes and....... and!! You know where this goes.
Lowering is not an end in itself. I don't care if mine are lowered much at all, but I do care, very much, that the beast handles well!!
