"Bouncing' Spedo 120-130

The speedometer on my 1967 122s has been quite erratic since I picked the car up a couple weeks ago.

At a complete stop it correctly indicates a speed of zero. At lower speeds and at initial acceleration, it seems like it bounces between undershooting and overshooting rapidly. Once moving at a steady pace, the indicated settles down considerably, usually somewhere in the 70-80 mph range when I'm traveling at an actual speed of (guessing here) 45-50 mph.

The previous owner mentioned something about his mechanic saying a spring was the issue, but I've also read that binding in the cable can cause problems with inaccurate readout. Any suggestions on first steps?
