A/C Problems 2 questions 200 1993

1. The schrader valve on the low side where I add the freon will not register any pressure on my gauge. I tried to add some freon but it will not go in. I pressed the valve and it was able to get it to hiss, but the gas coming out of it was not cold?

2. I jumped the wire on the dryer with a paper clip, and was not able to get the compressor to turn on. Bad compressor? Original one at 247K.

I checked fuse and it is patent.

Thoughts?
