Mechanic's diagnosis reasonable? Short answer, No IMHO

1) Yes. The OD (control) switch IS replaceable — part # 1377164 for $19.79 ("internet" price) at http://www.tascavolvoparts.com//index.do

2) No. I've never heard of one causing OD (relay) to drop out. That would have to be a "shorted" switch. Most often it's the OD relay that fails with age. You could try replacing it yourself (see below).

3) NO

4) No. Replace the relay. Part# 1363444 is $32.33 at Tasca. See figure below.
