strut replacemnt how to? 700 1988

Last summer I replaced the strut inserts on my '90 760 GLT. To my surprise, I found the cone bearings thoroughly shot. Even the arm (one each side of car) were too far gone. The cone bushings have a metal insert. The rubber surrounding the insert was wasted and rubbing against the arm mating surface. I ended up ordering replacements. They come as Aluminum or steel. Follow the parts diagram for your specific model to determine which metal, mine was steel. It's difficult to speculate these front suspension jobs will be done in a day when there is risk of other repairs. Incidentally, I stayed with nivomats for the rear and never looked back.
