1995 940 temperature gauge not working

Our 1995 940 volvo sedan has a temperature gauge that is not working. We think it could be the engine coolant temperature sensor that is causing the problem. How do you unplug the connector to test it? How do we remove and replace the sensor it this is indeed the problem. Also what other things should we be looking for to get this gauge working again?
