Here's a formerly common question that is causing me some trouble.
My 130 sedan's got a crane electronic ignition and an 1800E coil. I'm trying to install a new 52mm 240 series tachometer. I had working previously, but likely due to bad wiring on my part, I managed to ruin both my blue bosch coil as well my original 52mm tach.
The problem was mystifying and took the form of several months of frustrating and unexplained stalls before I finally discovered the problem by ohm testing the coil and experimentally removing the tach. If I recall correctly, I ran with the tach from fall 2007 to spring of 2008, when I replaced the bad coil and removed the tachometer. I've not had a tach since.
Recently, I picked up a replacement 52mm tach and I wanted to get it installed this weekend. When I wired it up, however, I could not get the ignition system to work. Hooking up the tach *after* the car was running demonstrated that the tach does work, but when connected, it seems to cancel out my ignition pulse.
If you are unfamiliar, the 52mm VDO tach has three wiring prongs labeled "G" "-" and "+" I thought that the G was ground, - went to the - coil terminal and + went to fuse power.
Judging by the length and configuration of my old tach wiring harness, I had previously hooked + to the + terminal on the coil. I judged that this was how I had killed my tach and my old coil.
Anyway, I'm once again mystified as to why the tachometer cancels the ignition and I definitely do not want to risk killed both tach and coil by doing this wrong.
I know several BB member had a 52mm tach on their dash. How have you guys wired up your tachs to avoid wrecking your ignition and coil?
