incessant road noise/scrape 120-130 1968

Still getting lots of low rumble scraping noises when I reverse the car and to a much lesser extent when I'm driving. It is driving me crazy. It sounds like my brakes are dragging, but I'm not seeing any abnormal wear.

To trace the problem I replaced the slightly-suspect from rotors and calipers with a pair of good used ones from my stash. This included well-greased bearings and carefully torquing and pinning of the castle nut. I took each nut to 50 lbs-ft and back each off 2 flats and inserted my cotter key. This gave me good "spin" without fear of over or under-tightening. Weirdly, I still get one obvious problem and I find it mystifying. Nothing is binding, but there is an intermittent scrape of the brake pads and rotor - maybe warped, but the old rotor and caliper combo did precisely the same thing. I have approx. four spare rotors. What are the chances that I pick another rotor with precisely the same warp?

Could something else be going on here??

in the AM, when I back out of my driveway, I get a heavy scrapping sound that stops shortly after I enter the forward gears. I don't really get the noise if I just pull straight out. It seemed to be coming from the driver's side rear drum, so I pulled it and examined the hardware, self-adjusters, and pads. There was some slight wear on the lower pads and no sign at all of any metal on metal contact. Just rule out problems, I reset the self-adjuster mechanism and installed a different drum. But, when I went to drive the car, I got the same obnoxious scraping noise in reverse.

It maybe worth noting that the driver's rear drum comes off without need of a puller. I'm told that's bad, but nobody has explained what the problem really is. The passenger side does not have that problem, but I did not examine it today because it was checked over the weekend.

I'm running out of ideas. U-joints, differential fluid, and the center bearing are about the only things left to check. Of course there are the vintage IPD lowering springs, but I've checked the clearances and there's nothing hitting - except maybe part of the steering on really sharp turns. I had these noises before the springs but they have gotten steadily worse recently.

Any ideas?
