SRS dash light stays on 200 1992

The SRS dash light stays on. Bentley says this "requires service at the earliest possible moment". The book also notes for cars older than 10 years, service should be performed on the SRS. And, that that service should be accomplished by certified Volvo mechanics. And this is a '92 244. I acquired the car recently from my daughter. She and her husband did have a dealership investigate and were told it needed a new crash sensor - and at a premium price. I went to a PNP, found another '92 with light rear damage and no airbag deployed. I removed the stand-by power unit, crash sensor and their cables from under the driver's seat.

I'm assuming that the dash light indicates that the SRS would not function (airbag will not deploy when conditions are right). Is this a correct assumption? Is there a "non-destructive test" I could try? (a pun?) Bentley even cautions about using an ohmmeter, etc.

My guess is, if I swap out the two units (standby power unit and crash sensor with cables) and the dash light goes out with battery reconnected and car powered up that the SRS will function on demand. (I'm a driver that wouldn't mind a little airbag in my face).

For the fun of Volvos,
Mike
